Inspiring the Next Generation: How Middle School Students in Utah are Learning to Think Like Shark Tank Entrepreneurs

At Distinct, we believe in the power of entrepreneurship to transform lives and communities. That's why we were thrilled to read about the innovative financial education project happening in Utah, where middle school students are being taught to pitch like Shark Tank entrepreneurs. This initiative, part of CNBC’s Cities of Success series, is not only inspiring but also aligns closely with our own entrepreneurial journey.

In the Draper suburb of Salt Lake City, sixth graders from Draper Park Middle School participated in the “It’s My Business” competition, sponsored by Junior Achievement of Utah and Idaho in partnership with CNBC. This Shark Tank-inspired competition challenged students to turn their ideas into viable business pitches, competing for the chance to impress a panel of judges, including Olympic gold medalist Ashley Caldwell and top business leaders from Utah.

One standout team, Just Right Clothing Company, developed t-shirts with heating and cooling technology for maximum comfort. Other innovative ideas included the Wish Wash Pet Brush, an all-in-one grooming tool, and 2 Lit 2 Sip, a multi-functional heating and cooling cup. These young entrepreneurs spent three months brainstorming and developing their business ideas, culminating in a pitch competition at JA City, an experiential learning center in Orem, Utah.

This project is a testament to the importance of introducing financial education and entrepreneurial thinking at a young age. Utah has been a pioneer in this field, being the first state to require a personal finance course for high school graduation back in 2004. Today, 26 states have similar requirements, but initiatives like this one in Draper Park Middle School take it a step further by engaging students even earlier.

At Distinct, we draw inspiration from programs like these. Our own entrepreneurial journey has been influenced by the principles and excitement of Shark Tank. We believe that fostering an entrepreneurial spirit in young people can lead to a future filled with innovative small businesses that drive economic growth and community development.

Imagine the impact if more schools across the country adopted similar programs. By teaching students the fundamentals of business and finance, we can equip them with the skills and confidence needed to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. This not only benefits the students but also has the potential to create a new generation of small business owners who can contribute to their local economies.

In conclusion, the financial education project in Utah is a shining example of how we can inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs. At Distinct, we are excited to see how these young minds will shape the future and are committed to supporting initiatives that encourage entrepreneurial thinking. Let's work together to replicate this idea and create more opportunities for young people to explore the world of business.
